Review of if.... (1968) by Whitney B — 20 Apr 2008
Automatically I feel that a big chunk of this film is lost on my part because I am neither, British or attended a boarding school. What I did take from it is a criticism on how the average British teen is "supposed to" grow up in England.
You can tell that the majority both fears and envies those above them with the power that they enforce upon them. Most strive to attain it someday, some say they detest it, but grab it when it is eventually offered and some completely revolt against it, all of these types are portrayed.
I think this way of thinking is so deeply engrained in the English psyche from hundreds of years of having kings that were held at a godlike-level by the people, where power was abused and was not overthrown nearly enough.
Malcolm McDowell and his friends likely went on to be some part of the punk revolution in England in 1979. As for the film it was good, the color changes were unneeded, but I have read it was purely a money thing, and the script was a little undercooked making the fantasy moments a little muddy to understand or believe.
