Review of if.... (1968) by Brian Z — 11 Jul 2008
Period piece from 1968 which reflects perfectly the revolutionary ferment and class tension of that time. Set in a classic English boarding school with fagging and caning still playing a central role in the day to day running of the school, If.
... explores some of the dynamics and frustrations of those who participate in such a system. I myself attended a similar but more liberal English public (private) school nearly a decade later, but can still identify with many of the elements and undercurrents which are elegantly portrayed in the movie.
Some great scenes, but the many weaknesses of the film means this is a movie for the hard core film buff only.
