Review of if.... (1968) by Tibor B — 27 Jul 2008
Lindsay Anderson's cult film captures perfectly the anarchic, counter-culture spirit of the late 60s. The film perfectly captures the very British world of private boys schools, the cruelty, oppression and corruption as well as intimations of sexual abuse.
Mcdowell shines in a great cast as Travis, ringleader of a trio of misfits, who become singled out by the institution and fight back. It's uncertain how to take the film towards the finale - the violent climax is suggested to be pure fantasy, through increasingly surreal moments and works as simple allegory.
But in todays world of school shootings and teen violence, a literal reading is also frighteningly viable.
