Review of if.... (1968) by Quinto W — 29 Aug 2009
I had an interest in seeing this film for two reasons; first of all, I was told McDowell's performance in this is what prompted Stanley Kubrick to cast him in "A Clockwork Orange". Second of all, it's set in a strict private school, and it has to do with a private school environment, of which I've had experience.
The film is still quite good, and McDowell, as the leader of a violent revolution from the student body, is certainly well cast in this film. His character Mick Travis would appear again in two other films, though in a very different form from what I other understand.
Likely the most fascinating part of the film is the ending, where the students lead a revolution against the oppressive school staff. Very fascinating conclusion, but I would be lying if I didn't confess Columbine and Virginia Tech has colored that final scene in a harsh way.
Hopefully that won't prevent people from giving the film a chance, as there is much that is positive about it.
