Review of if.... (1968) by Anthony C — 18 Sep 2010
Brit Public School boys go rampant in this 1960's classic of rebellion, but against society and against film convention. Malcolm McDowell is dead perfect here as the wicked schoolboy, while the supporting cast makes the most of the limited budget and slapdash nature of the production.
Black and white sections appeared originally due to budget problems, but become part of the alienation that the characters feel from their years in the school. I haven't seen this film in a long while, so I don't know if it holds up, but it made a great impression on me in 1974 when I saw it.
Also, the sequel, O Lucky Man! works well.
