Review of if.... (1968) by Elgan D — 10 Mar 2012
If.... is one of those films that never really seems to age. It's more of a conversation piece rather than something that's left on a shelf to sit for decades and collect dust. The subject matter was, and still is fresh, relevant, and meaningful.
Malcolm Mcdowell's performance as the teen anarchist Mick Travis may be the best of his entire career, but is always overshadowed by his work in A Clockwork Orange (1971). All of the characters in the film are three dimensional, and are all important even if they are on screen for a brief moment.
Though most of the subject matter can be seen as realistic, a lot of the film is illusionary and mysterious, and makes the viewer question what they are seeing on the screen. The final scene of the film is both horrific and poetic.
The close up of the young rebel is one of the screen's most unforgettable moments. The final product is a British masterwork. Almost forty-five years after its original release, If.... still manages to leave audiences enthralled and mesmerized.
It will forever be apart of cultural and cinematic history, and will always remain as a rebel yell, that still calls loudly to this day. (10/10).
