Review of Idlewild (2006) by Sayata G — 05 Sep 2006
Outkast is amazing at making music, and I love their visual style, like in their videos. Music videos are simply that, a visual aid to music (thus not really needed). I seriously thought this movie would be awesome. I expected it. No matter how much thought and creativity goes into a song, or for that matter, a whole album, it is not the equivalent to a film with dialogue, plot, or character development. Under the direction of the guy who made many of Outkast's recent videos, you get the feeling of a really awesome music video on MTV, with all it's spunk and pizzazz, only extended to feature length!
It can only test one's patience.
Once again may I say that I enjoy Outkast's music. But I did not enjoy this movie. If you subtract the fancy shmancy musical numbers and cute little visual effects, this movie feels like it's been done a hundred times over. It borrows heavily from other movies so much, that the group I saw this movie with, was yelling out predictions... and we were right. PLUS points for the art direction and musical numbers which were entertaining.
