Review of Idlewild (2006) by Desiree Y — 13 Jun 2007
I was really excited about finally seeing this movie. I like outkast and I liked the concept. but a) I understand that it's supposed to be a fantasy, but there's blatant, intentional anachronism and then there's careless anachronism, b) this film does very little that's new in terms of storyline, and i'm tired of seeing men and women in the same old roles, c) i'm currently reading a book about the bleak and dusty life and race relations in small-town georgia in the 1940s, and I have trouble picturing it being any more glamorous during the depression/prohibition, and d) none of the characters were developed effectively enough, especially percival, with whom we are supposed to sympathize the most.
BUT. the music was good, and I can blame my tiny tv for my not being able to fully enjoy the cinematography and dance sequences. you'll probably still like it.
