Review of Idlewild (2006) by Elizabeth W — 03 Jul 2008
An imaginative, charmingly anachronistic, bootlegged booze-saturated speakeasy-meets-hip hop extravaganza, not to be taken too seriously. Antwan A. Patton and Andre Benjamin, frontrunners of the titanic rap vehicle Outkast, stand their ground histrionically and dramatically, and even those who have never been enamored of hip-hop will not be able to resist the amazing, cuckoo clock-laden extravaganza "Chronomentrophobia.
" Faizon Love, Ben Vereen, Terrence Howard, and Cicely Tyson (marvelous in the remarkably limited role of Mother Hopkins) turn in some fine supporting performances.
