Review of Idiocracy (2006) by Tonypolito — 18 Aug 2010

We've all questioned what the future is going to look like when the current societal trend - of rising numbers of people seemingly unable to competently read/write/speak, think logically, or even count change correctly - continues. Director Mike Judge ("Office Space") gives us his satiric answer by deep-freezing two ordinary people straight into the hilariously dopey and dysfunctional year 2505.

There, cars are endlessly driven off bridges engineered into nowhere, doctors say 'dude' a lot (and not much else), skyscrapers are built crooked and bundled together by twine, Costco sells law school degrees, the US President is a former pro wrestler and porn star, and news has morphed into 'Hot Naked Chicks & World Report.'.

Further, the hit comedy of the year is titled "@ss" and features nothing but pictures of the same, marquee lettering is constantly mis-spelled (and crooked), prime-time tv is a half-hour of a man getting constantly smacked in the groin, customer service agents know only how to push buttons with pictures on them - and vending machines that never work spray mace into the faces of dissatisfied customers then put their children into protective custody.

It'd be easy for the unknowing to suspect this film to be "Dumb & Dumber" toilet humor, but really it's a rather clever satire of the sadder state of current societal intelligence and dysfunction - and will especially tickle the funnybone of those viewers who have been frustrated by it.
