Review of Idiocracy (2006) by Digital B — 03 Sep 2010

Idiocracy is one of those films in which it's conception is something that could come true in the future. The film stars Luke Wilson and Maya Rudolph as a pair of ordinary American citizens who participate in a top secret military hibernation experiment but a freak accident causes them to wake up five hundred years into the future. They discover that the world has degenerated into a dystopia where advertising, commercialism, and cultural anti-intellectualism run rampant and dysgenic pressure has resulted in a uniformly stupid human society devoid of individual responsibility or consequences. So basically,humans have been extremely dumbed down in their intelligence instead of advancing in it.

The movie's humor is extremely dumb but it's done in a very smart,satiric way that director/co-writer Mike Judge has perfected several times with his past work. Luke Wilson and Maya Rudolph both fit their roles well as the only normal people on Earth. But the supporting cast really boost this film up,especially Terry Crews,who plays U.S. President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho. Other notable performances also come from Dax Shepard,Justin Long,and Stepehn Root. But Mike Judge is the real star of this film. He knows the type of smart,satiric humor most of us moviegoers look for these days. His view of this world is so accurate,it's frightening. Much of the gags include product placement of famous goods of today but with titles that pertain to the society of the film such as Extra Big-Ass Fries,Uhmerican Express,and Str8ucks. You get where I'm going with this.

Idiocracy might as well be one of the most creative satiric comedies I have ever seen. This film is going to enjoy a higher cult status for the more people who see this film not only because of Mike Judge masterminding it but also because it shows where humanity could go if intelligence levels are dipping as the years go on.

Now I know this review does seem short,so I created a short version of what the year 2505 would be like with dumbed-down human intelligence in the film with regards to today's current pop culture and commercialism.

Favorite Movie: Dumb-Ass Movie,written and directed by the descendants of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. Won 12 Oscars,including Best Picture and Original Screenplay.

Favorite TV Show: You Ain't Smarter Than A 5th Grader.
