Review of Idiocracy (2006) by Jennifer S — 10 Apr 2010
A sort of spin-off of the sci-fi story "the marching morons" Idiocracy is a satire of popular/trash culture becoming a way of life for millions of people, this taken to the very extreme of course. This is not a movie about the future, but about the very present we live in, where celebrities are worshiped as semi-gods living among us, where ignorance has become not something to be ashame of, but something to be very proud.
Idiocracy keeps itself constantly funny, and even if some of the jokes seem like very "obvious" material, the fact that fox did not give this movie a proper release in cinemas speaks for itself.
The movie do falls short on it's aim, or maybe is just somewhere else,. For instance, religion is never ever mentioned in the movie at all, you could say that the movie is showing trash culture as the next gods of humanity. At the end what is truly bringing humanity to a swamp is not just simple "dumbness", but the greed of a few, and the apathy of many. But that might be material for another time.
