Review of Identity Thief (2013) by Marisa D — 13 Aug 2013
Exactly how many times do we have to see Jason Bateman ("Arrested Development") play the exact same character before we tire of him completely? Oh, sure, it was almost nice to see him in 'The Change-Up' last year, if for nothing else than to see him attempt to do something different.
However, in this flick, he's back to playing the character he always plays, and he's just as annoying as ever. Oh, sure, it's nice to have Melissa McCarthy (The Hangover: Part III) in to balance him out, but honestly, she runs laps around him in terms of comedy.
Like so many other R-rated comedies, this one starts out with an almost interesting (for comedy's sake) premise, then totally squanders the potential, tries to illicit emotions other than humor, and quells memorable aspects in the process.
There are several laughs to be had, but it's completely forgettable.
