Review of Identity Thief (2013) by Ana B — 18 May 2014
Comedy telling us the story of Sandy Patterson, a family man with a bright career in accounting that has just found out that he might loose his job since his identity and his savings have been stolen by someone in Florida. Desperate to get his life back in track he decides to travel there and get this mysterious woman to the Denver Police Department to confess for her misdeeds. When he finally meets his nemesis he is surprised to find a troublesome, overweight and lonely lady with the wrong approach to life. At this point the picture becomes a road movie; in their journey Sandy and Diana get to know each other an end up bonding in a friendly way.
There is a good intention in this film, unfortunately the plot has more holes than an Emmental cheese- I mean nobody really believes she will willingly board that car that is going to take her to Denver Police, do you?- and the whole of the situations are far too forced. McCarthy and Bateman are talented and truly deserved a better, more believable script. At the end everything is far too easy and cheesy and you end up caring very little for any of the character as you can predict exactly what's going to happen next.
