Review of Ideal Home (2018) by Mmadnessgames — 02 Jan 2019

This is a good film, but it annoys me that it has to push a political angle so blatantly. During the closing credits, I felt myself being manipulated a bit which I don't like.

I'm not sure what the point is here, honestly. Sometimes gay people are better parents? Obviously. But, sometimes they aren't.

The protagonists aren't particularly good parents. In fact, they're kind of bad parents. At least one of them is an alcoholic. They do drugs. They have pornography lying around the house. They don't take it seriously when the kid uses foul language at school. They don't report that there is a whole bottle of anti-anxiety medication floating around the school because of their negligence. (Hopefully a kid doesn't overdose or something.).

We want them to have the kid - not because they're ideal parents - but because the alternative is much worse.

Over the closing credits, there is a montage of same-sex parents with their children. So, what's the point here? What does this story say about same-sex parents in society?

The kid should probably be with his grandfather. That's the best option for him, I guess. But, I don't know what that means (in terms of same-sex parenting) generally.

It's a better than average film with good performances from two actors I like. I just wish it was a story rather than a sermon.
