Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Ayla T — 23 May 2008
Miike's best film to date. I really do not believe he can ever better this. This is the masterpiece.
Miike hijacks the gangster genre, injects with mindbending gore and violence, throws in a cowardly killer and a flamboyant wardrobe. And you get Ichi The Killer.
It's hard to believe in the same year Visitor Q was made. No, I won't stop saying how much I detest that film.
A great sense of humour underlies the more than any of his other films. The gore doesn't attempt to be art but instead you get the sense it's for fun. And it works.
