Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Private U — 23 Oct 2008
From the opening credits, which are written in Ichi's dripping spooge, this movie is a monument to excess.
Excessive violence, sadism, masochism, rape. Some of the violence is goofy but much of it is nasty. Even the fights tended to be cartoonishly goofy (with buckets of CGI blood) and not terribly intertesting.
Ichi is generally a love it or hate it kind of film; fans of extreme cinema and Miike often love it. I've debated my dislike for this film with other Miike fans a great deal; while I often really like his films, I found that this one had nothing to offer beyond simply being as extreme as possible.
