Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Eliad T — 18 Aug 2010
If it wasn't for my brother Omri, I wouldn't have watched Ichi the Killer. Well, thank you! It's been quite an experience! Most of you people probably don't even know this movie, so let me warn you - it's really, really, really violent. It's violent in a Kill Bill sense of way, only much more gruesome and shocking. Yeah, the special effects (the CGI) of the violence often don't look realistic, but the makeup and props make the violent scenes look so bad, it's downright disturbing (the tongue-cutting scene!! WTF?? they did that in Oldboy, but we didn't really see the cutting of the tongue!).
Except for the violence, the sexuality and the obscenity of the movie, which obviously makes it a lot more memorable, the film is directed in a special way, and I can't say I've seen anything like it before..
Overall - a very good movie, not for the faint-hearted, weak stomached or whatever, ye been warned.
