Review of ICHI (2008) by Phil N — 01 Mar 2011
After Kitano's take on Zatoichi, do we really need another adaptation of the legendary blind swordsman? Maybe not, but Sori's version gives the story a twist by making Ichi female (a beautifully restrained performance from Haruka Ayase) as she teams up with an impotent samurai to take on the Banki bandits.
It's gently paced which allows the characters to breathe, but punctuates its languid stretches with some lively fight scenes. Unnecessary perhaps, but a worthy watch for fans of Japanese swordplay nonetheless.
