Review of Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) by Andrew D — 10 Jun 2013
Okay, I think that it's time to finish this series once and for all. In this fourth installment of the popular kids series, Manny's daughter Peaches is now a teenager, causing Manny's protective father gene to kick in.
He won't let her go off alone and won't accept that she's growing up. Suddenly, when the land starts to divide thanks to the acorn antics of Scrat, Manny is divided from his family and vows that he will find them again.
With Diego and Sid along for the ride, they soon encounter some pirates and their notorious captain, Gut, who wants them dead. Seriously, they had a to make a FOURTH film for this series?! I understand that kids love these characters, but I think that this may be pushing it now.
The first Ice Age film was actually pretty good. There's some great comedy and themes for kids, as well as things for adults that make it enjoyable for the whole family. This time, it seems like the filmmakers have given up on trying to keep parents' attentions and have focused on the kid jokes instead.
There's many stupid jokes in Continental Drift that it's literally not funny! There are some good jokes, but it mostly involves Scrat, who's best known for being the punching bag of the series.
Everything else feels painful and awkward to sit through at times when it comes to being a parent or older brother being dragged to a kids movie. I'm really hoping that this will be the last film in the series because this was just not good.
If a fifth film is made, I'm hoping that DreamWorks will take a page out of PIXAR and learn how to smartly integrate some adult jokes into the film, as well as kid jokes. If not, this series should just be extinct at this point.
