Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Indiefilmlover — 08 Dec 2017
In a year filled with films about dysfunctional parent-child relationships (e.g., Lady Bird, Three Billboards, The Florida Project) "I, Tonya" takes the prize for the most poisonous. Watching Tonya Harding (played by Margot Robbie) and her mother LaVona (Allison Janney) go at it is like watching a train wreck or a street brawl -- it can be tough to watch, but it's hard to look away either.
For those familiar with the true events that inspired this film, you might leave it with a bit more compassion for what Harding went throughout in her life. There's never a dull moment in Steven Rogers's imaginative screenplay.
It's filled with great lines and plays like a gangster movie. Robbie, Janney and the rest of the cast seem perfectly suited for their roles. Craig Gillespie's direction and Tatiana S. Riegel's editing keep things slightly off-balance, so you're not always sure what is going to happen next.
"I, Tonya" is definitely not your standard biographical film. This film is definitely not for the faint of heart.
