Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Dae J — 26 Jan 2018
Is truth stranger than the fiction? I think that's the question that you'll ask when you watch this film 'I,Tonya' a biopic of Tonya Harding, a former U.S. Ice Skater. Again with biopic, I'm sure there are other materials in regards to the story of Tanya Harding. This is more personal portrait & character study of Tanya, with bizarre and off the wall humor, is funny yet heartbreaking at the same time. There were few things that stood out from the film...
First, association. I will never know if Tanya Harding was involved with crime that she was accused of, it depends on the people you spoke to. What everything boils down at the end, was that she was surrounded with the people who were involved in crime, thus that makes her guilty even if she's innocent. From her parents (mother), husband/manager to her body guard, she was in the company of not a great people and that led her downfall of her career. Tragic and relevant to out time...
Second, perception of Media. From the films like Gone girl to the Post, the Media, from its existence can easily manipulate the stories of someone & something to make its objects a hero or villain and sometimes instead of blaming the victim or the media, it is us, the audience are guilty of it all because We Want the Story!! Especially with what's going on in our country, when we view & listen to the news, our objectivity is absent, we only respond with our emotions. Humans have emotions, so it is difficult to separate them and this film reminded me of the role that media plays when it comes to news & story telling of something & someone. Will I be easily persuade by the media just because they are telling me the information that I want to hear? Can I be objective & more thoughtful about the topic, issue & etc?? I hope that people step back and think for themselves before called someone guilty or not guilty...
Overall, great film to watch & be entertained through & through, highly recommend if you can see the film!! ??
