Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Jonathan B — 02 Jan 2018
I knew very little about the US skater Tonya Harding before watching this biopic of her incredible life. The film finely balances the darkly comic, high camp and deeply, tragically disturbing moments that went into shaping this brilliant and infamous character.
It paints her as part orchestrator and part victim of her circumstances and manages to make her almost sympathetic despite the dreadful things she and her co-conspirators did. Margot Robbie puts in a brazenly fierce performance as the skater, driven by a real bitch of a mother and the desire to win at any cost in her pursuit of fame.
It is a real American Dream gone rampantly out of control and I loved it.
