Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Deston N — 07 Jan 2018
A very interesting take on the career of Tony Harding (Margot Robbie) who at one time was arguably the best figure skater in the world. The film goes over Harding's early life with her mother LaVona (Allison Janney) who was extremely hard on Harding.
It delves into her very abusive relationship with her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan) and his dim witted friend Shawn (Paul Walter Hauser). The movie shows the rise of someone who really never fit into the US Figure Skating since Tonya was basically a red neck, but she was extremely good at what she did.
There's always going to be some controversy surround Tonya Harding and whether she did in fact know about the attack on fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan (Caitlin Carver), but it's up to the viewer to decide whats real and what's not.
The film is very well acted by Robbie, Sebastian and especially Janney. I wouldn't be shocked to see all three get nominations for the Oscars. It's a tale about a really gifted person who just wanted to be loved get her dreams ultimately crushed, but it's well worth it for the great performances and overall pretty crazy story.
