Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Tim M — 18 Jan 2018
I was in Africa during this whole controversy, but remember the US news we so gladly consumed. I always thought Tonya had played a part in the attack on Nancy, but according to this movie she really didn't, and what's worse her life was completely ruined as a result of something she had no knowledge of, but that her (ex)husband Jeff (and/or his friend) orchestrated.
This film made me feel really bad for Tonya--she had a horrible mentally and physically abusive mother (Janney is wonderful), then a crazy abusive husband, and a shitty life apart from skating. Therefore the film did what it aimed to do--got Tonya the sympathy she (probably?) deserves.
The only thing I really didn't like was how the characters sometimes talked to the fourth wall (like in old Modern Family) as narration when they TRULY didn't need to do this. It took away from the strength of what was going on, in my opinion.
