Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Anthony B — 02 Feb 2018
If you had told me it was a Martin Scorsese movie I would have believed it. I, Tonya is one of the best films of the year and that is due in huge part to the flow of the production. The editing, cinematography, guilty pleasure soundtrack, etc.
It all reminded me of Martin Scorsese's work, namely Goodfellas, Casino, and even Raging Bull a little bit. Also, the cast is a blast. Margot Robbie nails it with one of the most fearless, thoughtful, evenhanded, hilarious, and heartbreaking performances in recent memory.
Alison Janney also does a decent job but given all of the phrase and award buzz surrounding her performance, I'll be honest, I was expecting more. Don't get me wrong, she did a good job but her role was probably the easiest one in the film to play.
She never struck me as a real person as much as a cheap caricature as inspired by Tonya Harding's skewed version of the truth, that said, that's what the script (cleverly so) is built around, perspective and that grey area that exists between fact and fiction.
Overall, I. Tonya deserves all of the acclaim it is receiving from critics and none of the bashing it is receiving from audiences (seriously, every one I've talked to has called this film boring and or stupid.
) Also, regardless of how you feel about Tonya Harding as a person (I personally think she's a nutter) I, Tonya does her story justice.
