Review of I Spy (2002) by Sarah G — 21 Oct 2009
I somehow find this movie very silly and fun. Eddie Murphy didn't ruin the movie. He is very annoying and played a character to fit that. We spend most of the movie sympathizing with Owen Wilson for having to put up with him.
That being said, Owen Wilson gave his typical performance, but I liked how it played out in this movie. He's a slightly clumsy and goofy character. When watching him descend from the ceiling by a cable while flailing his legs to keep balanced, I can't help but think that real secret-agent spies are more like that than James Bond or Ethan Hunt.
He is constantly arguing with, tricking, or complimenting Eddie Murphy during the action scenes, which makes it all a bit more fast-paced and silly. The comic timing was all nothing short of perfect. This movie wouldn't have been as good with out Owen Wilson because his weird voice and goofy little face make the movie a little more unique than regular spy movies.
