Review of I Spit on Your Grave (2010) by Chinedu O — 16 Apr 2011
This was a totally unnecessary remake of the brutal but cheese-tastic rape/revenge classic âI Spit On Your Graveâ?. A young female writer goes into the middle of rural America to work in peace, and is sexually assaulted multiple times by a bunch of sick redneck losers.
I had one big problem with this remake... it would have been better if they updated it to reflect modern times. For example, the female victim/protagonist does not seem to be mentally retarded in any way, YET she goes out to lodge in the middle of nowhere, all by Skinny Flat-Chested Single White City Girl self.
Has she never seen ANY horror movies in her entire life? Then there's the sexual assaults themselves... while I'm not a fan of gratuitous gore (nor am I downplaying the terror and psychological ugliness of the sexual assault scenes), they were pretty tame compared to some of the other movies out there (or even HBO movies, for that matter).
There was no full nudity. Wasn't she anally violated too? Where was the blood? And last but not least... how did a little skinny girl overpower each of those big dudes and manhandle them into all those elaborate killing set-ups? Come on.
It's not like the movie indicated that she had super-strength or enhanced stamina... the things she did off-camera implied much more power and tactical know-how, leaning towards âsnuff filmâ? territory.
This led me to believe that she could have been an ex-Marine, Black Ops agent, or torture expert and was just âretiringâ? into a career of writing. None of that was indicated, so I have to assume that she somehow got Jigsaw to help her out.
There were other plot holes, but I'll stop here. Some might say It's Just A Movie, but I say it is supposed to be a MODERN movie... there are SOME expectations set when you take on this subject matter.
This movie should have been COMPLETELY gritty and more realistic because yes, sexual assaults do happen in real life, but the SET-UP was ridiculous, the assault wasn't shocking/explicit enough, while the revenge parts were pretty over-the-top, and SAW-like in their execution.
. As a result, I found it hard to suspend disbelief enough to really âget intoâ? the story and truly empathize with the victim. This oddly lop-sided âI Spit On Your Graveâ? remake just seems like a cheap money-grab.
Avoid it unless you are truly bored. And even then, I suggest you rent the original 1977 version.
