Review of I Spit on Your Grave (2010) by Lei H — 23 Dec 2017
This film had me feeling such mixed feelings that I had to leave a review of it somewhere.
Half of the film was just focused on torturing and humiliating the girl which wasn't nearly as scary as it was just...disgusting. I left for a moment thinking it'd be over shortly like in most horror films, but it just kept droning on and on. When it finally got to the "good part" as most people say, the very first person the girl hurt was the boy (with a mental disorder/illness) who they forced to rape her, and it was just terribly unsatisfying. He didn't deserve it at all. He died later by being shot.
Her revenge on the rest of the evildoers was creative but it didn't last for as long as it did to her, I am not saying they should have been tortured but it gave me the impression that the director wanted to linger on the girl's pain a little too much. I'm glad there was some kind of punishment, but wasn't that happy with it.
Though some others mentioned it being some kind of "empowerment" film for women, there was nothing empowering about it at all, there's nothing empowering about holding people helplessly captive and torturing them maliciously no matter how bad the person is.
Finally there is no message to take away from this film. Don't beat up and rape women? OK, but anyone with a stable mind wouldn't be doing that anyway.
If you are a violent person that enjoys suffering from both innocent women and awful men then I can see this being the kind of film you want to see. I'll try not to judge.
