Review of I Sell the Dead (2008) by Ryan H — 11 Mar 2012
Another silly and fun movie for the day. McQuaid does a lot with what appears to be a small budget. One thing that Arthur Blake has learned over the years is to never trust a corpse. And we learn that while he tells Father Duffy his life story of grave robbing.
He doesn't rob jewelry or goods from graves; he robs bodies. These bodies don't just stay dead either. He and the man who trained him, Willie Grimes, discover that they have stumbled upon something much more valuable.
They open a grave one night and discover a woman with a stake through her heart and garlic around her neck. When they take out the stake seems to be dead, but when they turn around she disappears. This was one of the funniest scenes in the movie (next to them getting felt up by a zombie).
McQuaid seems to love when horror movies through in ideas that don't make sense, so he plays them up in his film. Even though the vampire, or witch, or whatever she is, should just continually attack one of them, she keeps disappearing then coming back to scare them.
It had my friend and I laughing so hard. But McQuaid also does this in a more comic-book kind of way that he even makes a comic book transition at times. When he introduces the villains he shows them as a comic, then they spring to life.
It was a really cool sequence. There are many times that the film could have gotten hung up on its ideas and could have been self-indulgent. But it never felt like too much. Some things might not work all the time, but the majority of the time I Sell the Dead is a great film to watch with a friend.
Share some laughs at the ridiculous concepts. Just remember, don't go digging up graves unless you have a strong stomach and can handle anything that might come at you.
