Review of I Saw the Devil (2010) by Sarah Tuff-Britches M — 30 Jun 2011
As always, CHOI Min-sik showed a wonderful performance. And the cinematography was stunning! However, I found the movie on the whole to be a bit cliche and cheap, and a bit sexist I might add. Woman are always the intended targets, (though men are killed if at the wrong place at the wrong time), his victims are then raped, murdered and dismembered and in some cases physically consumed.
The only characters with agency are all men. I think there are more creative ways to paint a character as evil without falling into the old "women as victim" bit. And as for implausibilities, there were many.
The killer was sloppy and un-calculated - how was he not caught before this? And the main character was supposed to be some sort of Batman? (he used swallowed gps tracking device that also captures sound?) There were many scenes that had me scratching my head - a girl soundlessly escapes heavy metal chains.
All in all the length seemed unnecessary and in the end, sitting still became more torturous than the film itself.
