Review of I Saw the Devil (2010) by Scott K — 09 Jul 2011
It's hard to recommend this film, but it is an extremely accomplished and stylish genre film from South Korea. South Korea seems to have cornered the market on revenge films and of the one's I've seen (the Park trilogy), this one is the most brutal but also the most compelling.
The serial killer, played to perfection by Choi, is the pure embodiment of evil, but the spy out to exact revenge on him for the murder of his fiancee is really no better by the film's end. At just under 2.
5 hours, the movie is probably too long, but I was never bored. Probably the most explicitly violent film I've ever seen (which is saying a lot), so anyone intrigued by the positive reviews the film has been getting should know what they are getting into.
Definitely not a feel good movie.
