Review of I Saw the Devil (2010) by Shan S — 07 Dec 2011
Revenge may be a dish considered best served cold, but damn is it better when savored a little. Maybe even a lot. . . Take the vicious serial killer Kyung-chul for example. He has been committing diabolical acts and slicing people up for years and nobody has even come close to getting him.
That is until he makes the mistake of slaughtering the pregnant fiance of a secret agent who wastes little time before going rogue and hunting the monster down. To enact his fully-loaded plan of revenge on Kyung-chul though, the agent will have to flirt with the Devil inside of him and become a bit of a psycho killer as well.
. . Let me state that I don't use the term "jaw-dropping" lightly. But I can attest that after witnessing the trail of carnage this bloody backwards a55 cat & mouse game produced, it is more than appropriate to be used here.
What we have in this story is a gore-tastic roller coaster ride that gives "overkill" in a revenge plot new meaning. Be sure that you as a viewer can first stomach the content as it gets to be more than graphic.
But if you have, or develop some thicker skin, sit back and let your own inner-devil fly while watching pure evil get exactly what it deserves. And that is everything BUT something quick and painless.
"I Saw The Devil" ends up being a sadistically entertaining time with stunning visuals, riveting performances, and is just as insanely beautiful as it is just plain ol insane. When it comes to tales of revenge, very few films out there will even be able to compete with the nightmare pulled off here.
