Review of I Saw the Devil (2010) by Alex B — 07 Jan 2012
Brutal cat and mouse revenge thriller from Korea, well put together with a standout performance by Choi, but overlong, sloppily plotted and with no discernible point other than that torturing and killing people is bad.
As with Kim Ji-woon's The Good the Bad and the Weird there's something unsettling in the attitude to violence (particularly towards women in the case) and not the good kind of unsettling. The this-is-a-bit-relentless-and-unpleasant-kind.
Worth a look for fans of Korean cinema and of the genre, but there is better stuff out there.
