Review of I Saw the Devil (2010) by Derek B — 16 Jan 2012
I preferred Min-Sik Choi in Oldboy but he makes for a charismatically scary serial killer in this over-long and very brutal thriller. You can't help wondering if the protracted revenge taken by the bereaved cop, in which he brutalises, but doesn't quite kill Choi, then lets him go so he can hunt him again, is a genuine plot innovation or just an excuse to jam in as much gore as possible.
I tend toward the latter. Would have made a much better 100 minute film if some of the excess were taken out.
