Review of I Saw the Devil (2010) by Abe F — 22 Aug 2012
Not only is Ji-Woon Kim's grotesque epic one of the most unique revenge thrillers in years, it's also one of the most visually-striking; with stark reds and yellows perforating the otherwise bleak, Korean landscape, 'I Saw the Devil's' selective attention to colour is reminiscent of 2011's 'Drive' or even Rodriguez' 'Sin City.'.
The film's unflinching approach to its subject matter also helps to elevate its narrative stakes, as the audience, presented with a horrific act of violence in the film's opening scene, are now aware just how far this film is willing to go.
Like a train wreck, ISTD seems just too beautiful to look from.
