Review of I Origins (2014) by Adam R — 07 Feb 2015
I'm glad I didn't listen to the reviews that didn't give this movie a Fresh on RT. The NY Times summary says this about the viewers who liked this movie, "It may blow your mind, but only if you're not in the habit of using it." What a pompous and pretentious thing to say, and all I have to say to A.O. Scott is shame on you for your blatant slam and judgement of a lot of people, including myself.
Yes, I'm glad I watched this movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. Part of a great movie is that your antagonist changing viewpoints throughout the movie and Mike Cahill created a film that does this wonderfully. I can see how some would say this movie was a little on the slow side, but the film was nothing short of beautiful. The writing, acting, camerawork, music, all gelled together perfectly. I read one review state that the ending relied too much on music. There are four legs in a table and if you remove one, it will fall, and music is one of the legs of this movie. Most certainly it relies on music, that's how the movie was made. Imagine if in the movie 'The Right Stuff' or in 'Reservoir Dogs' there was no music in the slow motion walking scenes? Are you imagining it? .... Exactly, the scenes would not be anywhere as good as they were in the films.
Still, to each his own and if you like it, you like it. I would recommend watching it though. If you like a touch of magic in your movies, that glow of fantasy, of a higher power, then for sure watch this one.
