Review of I Melt with You (2011) by Freeman M — 01 Jul 2012
I have mixed feelings about this movie. First I want to say that there are some solid performances (with the exception of Sasha Grey who has no acting ability whatsoever, but luckily it's a very small role).
Rob Lowe's performance, while understated is very effective. Jeremy Piven's performance is flawless; I could find no fault with it. I understand the point of this film in many respects - our society values men based on what they do, and all of these men have failed in that respect.
They all too often see themselves has human doers rather than human beings. And this movie touches the surface of the lost and disposable male in western culture. However, there is no epiphany or way out for these men.
They embrace a week of hedonism that only feeds their self-destruction and sense of futility based on their failures. I guess this movie would be pointless or dishonest if it attempted a feel good happy solution, but it offers nothing emotionally for the viewer to come away with.
There is no difficult redemption either. If you want to see creative cinematography and strong performances - see it. But realize you'll still walk away from this film saying "What the f*(*!@#$%^ was that all about?
