Review of I Love You Phillip Morris (2010) by Michael H — 22 Jul 2011

I honestly had no idea what to make of this movie, and now attempting to write a pithy pseudo-intellectual blurb about it, I find that I still don't. So I'll list a few bullet points of things that struck me about the movie rather than try to write a tortuous couple paragraphs about it.

1) Jim Carrey proves once again his superior acting abilities. The movie's merits could be argued merely on this basis alone.

2) The movie as a whole has the feeling of a good movie, yet it left me feeling a little icky. But then, the icky moments of the film made me feel like I was watching a good movie. Wtf?

3) There is a surprising amount of believable tenderness between Carrey and McGregor.

4) Were the penis cloud shots really all that necessary? This isn't because I have anything necessarily against clouds looking like penis, but in context of the film, it feels awfully sophomoric.

5) The movie doesn't linger. It tells its story reasonably well, yet I didn't feel a particular reason to care about it.

So how many stars overall? I don't know. One apiece for Carrey and McGregor, and one more on faith that I saw something worthwhile. I reserve the right to change my mind pending a second viewing, but as I have no plans to ever see it again, my mind will more than likely remain closed for quite some time. I'm okay with that.
