Review of I Love You Phillip Morris (2010) by Jared M — 21 Oct 2011
Definitely a movie worth watching. Leslie Mann's character humorously gets to the bottom of the most potential misconception that could come from watching this movie: does gay have anything to do with stealing? This is a funny, yet heartwarming comedy.
The letter exchange of the gay lovers in the Oz-like jail reminded me of Wilde a bit. Would be interested in an analysis of the queer (already culturally imprisoned) relationship flourishing so well in jail.
What about the sky and the mother's calling that Jim Carrey revisits time and again? How is Steven's stealing money connect with his desire to come out, get divorced, and do what "I want to do! I'm gonna be a faggot"? And finally, one of the most beautiful scenes is the main characters' dance in their prison cell to Johnny Mathis' "Chances Are.
" This scene touched my <3.
