Review of I Love You Phillip Morris (2010) by F B — 14 Nov 2011
This is such a fantastically odd movie. For one this is the first movie I have seen where a gay couple just made sense. To me it never felt like it was a gay couple but 2 people who just connected in a way which leads to a loving relationship.
Two souls who were meant for each other that happened to be both men. And even more oddly enough that this is coming from a Jim Carrey project. But at the same time it being Carrey and McGreagor helps with that because they are such great and likable character actors.
The comedy really doesn't take any cheap shots or low browed which really helps it along and allows you to connect with the characters as people rather then objects of comedy or a novelty act. This is where Brokeback Mountain failed.
Still today, gay, in certain areas is still taboo. Brokeback tried to use that fact and force it upon you rather then just letting it take its natural part of the story. But at the same time if Brokeback never got made to help break that taboo barrier this would have never been made.
But enough on that. The comedy in this is 100% genuine. Never is there a moment added in out of the blue to get a laugh. Carrey and McGregor are great together. Watching them play off each other was brilliant.
I really hope to see them team up again. This movie is intelligent, emotional, thought provoking, and funny as hell. And for how crazy the story gets remember this is all based on a true story. My word is my motherfucking bond.
