Review of I Love You Phillip Morris (2010) by Joshua B — 29 Jun 2012
The bizarre true story of a con man (Jim Carrey) who meets the man of his dreams (Ewan McGregor) while incarcerated, I Love You Phillip Morris is an energetic and very funny film that showcases Carrey's best performance in years.
Like Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love, Carrey is essentially playing his popular goofy shtick, but more reined in and grounded. It is fun to watch the various schemes Steven Russel (Carrey) attempts to escape from prison, especially when you know they succeeded.
But there is a surprisingly warm and well-executed love story here as well. Carrey and McGregor have a nicely complementary level of chemistry that results in some genuine pathos and disarmingly subtle moments of performance.
This is a fine film.
