Review of I Love You Phillip Morris (2010) by Cesar F — 29 Nov 2012
It's a fun, silly movie, so in that way, Jim Carrey is perfect for it. What's amazing is that this is actually a true story, and the real Steven Russell is in solitary confinement in a Texas prison for life.
I'm confused, because this is billed as a comedy, yet I wasn't laughing out loud, I was just kind of waiting for whatever insanity came next. If anything this movie is sad, because Steven obviously has issues and never got any help that would have been beneficial.
Either way, Jim Carrey is good, but he's still just so Jim Carrey you really never get any insight into the real person behind the character. It's a whole lot of Manic but the film glosses over the Depressive parts.
Ewan McGregor is good, and if anything this movie is valuable for showing their love story, and that gay men can be liars, cons, criminals just as well as the rest of us.
