Review of I ♥ Huckabees (2004) by Jordan B — 03 Jun 2010
This is a great film. It kind of feels like a cross between two of my favorite filmmakers: The quirkiness of Wes Anderson and the philosophical strangeness of Charlie Kaufman. Although, this movie is not as tightly wound as Anderson's and Kaufman's best works.
The part of this movie that shines more than any other is the acting. Every single performance in this movie fun and motivated. Jason Schwartzman and Mark Wahlberg were especially great. In both of their quests to find the answer to their lives they hilarious performances. I wouldn't mind seeing these two in a buddy cop movie. Schwartzman has always stood out as a good actor from his roles in Anderson's films, but here, he takes it to a new level. Wahlberg never was an actor I paid too much attention to though. But in this movie, it definitely shows that he can act.
David O. Russell is probably in my list of top 25 directors now. With this movie and Three Kings, it's obvious he's great. It was a good story, but the plot of the movie is a bit shaky. I think could have been tighter. It's still a good movie. The themes were really thought provoking. I liked the portrayal of how the answer to life depends on the certain point of view. I can't wait for some more of his films come out.
And also, Petroleum is the root of all EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
