Review of I ♥ Huckabees (2004) by Andy M — 24 Feb 2009

Where to start with this film? Thatâ??s the question I have been asking myself for over a week now, and Iâ??m still non the wiser. You see, I © Huckabees is a truly brilliant film, but one in which not a lot happens, but a lot is questioned.

Okay, here goesâ?¦.Jason Schwartzman is an activist who cam paigns to save the land from redevelopment. However he is feeling uncertain about everything since Jude Law usurped his group from under him. Jude Law is a selfish industrialist, for the Huckabees retail group, to generate a positive public image. So, Schwartzman contacts some existential detectives to follow himself around and help him understand his connection to everything in life. He meets Mark Wahlberg, a fireman who was on the scene on 9/11, who has since begun to question everything, and has begun a one man campaign against the oil industry. Throw into the mix Isobelle Huppert as an ex-student of the detectives with opposing views who tries to change Schwartzmanâ??s therapy, and things just get very, very confusing, but in a highly entertaining and intellectual way.

Film these days have age ratingsâ?¦.this one needs an IQ rating. Something like 120A (anyone with an IQ of less than 120 must be accompanied by a philosopher). Whilst I really enjoyed the film, I am still non the wiser as to what on earth it was all about. Perhaps after another few viewings (maybe 20) I may get to grips with the whole of the film. Parts of the existential aspects I could follow, and the general ideas I can grasp. Just as a whole, I am confused, though in a good way.

There are going to be a lot of people who will walk out of the film, probably around the â??mudâ?? scene, as this is not a film which the mass audience will appreciate. More pity them as this is an example of an unconventional film played out in a very surreal manner.
