Review of I ♥ Huckabees (2004) by Brandon T — 14 Aug 2009
Film Exec 1: Let's greenlight a movie that will perform well with the arthouse crowd.
Film Exec 2: OK, but this time we've just got to put a whole lot of famous actors in it so that young people will see it.
Film Exec 1: Yeah, as long as they are pretty and they spout philosophic ideas at a rapid pace, people won't notice that its a ridiculous idea for a movie.
Film Exec 2: Yeah, claim a film as being satire and we can get away with that.
Pretentious... Ridiculous... It is intelligently written, but the story goes nowhere, the characters are mostly uninteresting and plays as a series of existential questions / discussions simply strung together with no real rhyme or reason.
Satire about therapy? Yeah right. More like a film that takes itself too seriously. Its hard to make a film that can dissect philosophical ideas, develop a coherent story and still be funny and I Heart Huckabees just couldn't manage it.
