Review of I ♥ Huckabees (2004) by Rogerinho S — 27 Jun 2012
Ok, I agree that a moment or two in the movie you get somewhere and get a little excited about the idea but that's it, that's all this movie can tickle inside you! If you already are familiar with existentialism, you will most likely leave the theater after the first half and if your are not then you wont understand anything at all this one! The entire 1 hr and 46 minutes you'd just keep seeing the old existential detective couple following the client and the potential clients rather intrusively and childishly. They wont just leave and would bore you to death with their observational tactics. They do however, get you at one or two moments where they confront the clients and the family but that's that!
Everyone cries around and the whole world of the characters involved gets entangled into 3 unit world - one based on the proponents of this existentialist detective agency, the second based on the self help books and the other detective whose ideas are reverse to the first crowd and the third by the usual lives of the characters. This movie is arbitrary and keeps running round and round a point correlating the philosophy to each one in the movie in the most banal manner. You'd just ask yourself why you decided to put up with this torture, is this comic or real and thought provoking or trying to be surreal, what's keeping you to watch it till the end?
It's difficult to hate Dustin Hoffman, the man who has been impeccably interesting all his life but you do disrespect him while watching this. Naomi Watts, the only blonde pretty girl you thought had brains loses all image in this one. Mark Wahlberg, the rough and tough guy chats like an angry and naive teenage girl throughout the movie. Jude Law, the pretty boy stands out amongst the boring lot! Isabelle Huppert adds some spice but no matter how much you add anything to this "mock"tail of a movie, you will fall short! Jason Schwartzman, the supposed protagonist of the movie who made you laugh so much in his debut movie, Rushmore, annoys you in this one! He seems to take control one moment with his high speed bike rides but the next moment he gets a punch in his nose and nobody cares in the movie or outside the movie what he is going through and what he has to say! Schwartzman, get those flicks cut off already! Pluck that mole out and trim those brows! Could you be more unconvincing and irritating now that you have grown up? Wow what a mess of a movie this was!
