Review of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell (2009) by Tj O — 16 Jan 2010
Apparently, there was a lot of hooplah about this film and the novel it was based off of. There was some sort of odd feminist backlash/boycott or something. I'm not really sure. I'm not familiar with the material at all and had no idea what the film was about before going into it except that I recall the film coming to theatres with all the bombastic intensity of a church mouse and leaving just as quietly.
Oddly enough, I found myself laughing more than I was groaning if that makes any sense. For the first 30 minutes, I was nearly tempted to turn the film off. Most of the characters were unlikeable pricks and that's always a hard sell for me. Then, something magical happened, the characters started growing on me and then everything sort of fell into place. It's essencially The Hangover, but dirtier and less PC.
Still, the film is just a little too much at times. It's funny, but then other times it's just too goofy and immature to be humorous. It's worth a watch, though...for the open minded only.
