Review of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell (2009) by David H — 13 Aug 2010
I heard good things, especially from this one friend of mine, and I had only seen the book laying around bookstores before, so I finally decided to check this out - and I am so glad that I did. This movie was SO funny with some GREAT writing.
The humor is, I'll admit, immature...but it's so -maturely- immature that it's just hysterical. Does that make sense? I don't know. Maybe the movie made me more stupid. Point is, this film is your typical "male-bonding" flick filled with all sorts of shenanigans that they could possibly get into.
I'm talking about midgets, prison fights, strippers and Halo (funny enough, all of those elements are so interconnected in the film). Matt Czuchry played excellently in his self-absorbed, narcissistic character, based on the man who wrote the book, who just takes from everyone around him without regard.
Bradford...is just priceless. I've never seen a more cynical, nihilistic, women-hating jerk of a character, and he plays it so believably it's scary. I love it when he finally meets his match.
And speaking of meeting his match, in terms of Czuchry's character, a poop joke has never been so funny. Filled with debauchery, booze and filthy insults to women, this movie was extremely enjoyable and definitely redeems itself at the end (this is not to say that I enjoy insulting women.
..it was just...funny--well, there's no way I'm getting my foot out my mouth here). See it. Enjoy its formulaic plot, and take pleasure in knowing that Tucker Max is a real person.
