Review of I, Frankenstein (2014) by Dann M — 15 May 2014
(3 Stars) I know you're not going to believe me, but considering it's absolutely ridiculous-sounding premise (Frankenstein's monster is a demon slayer) and the fact it looks and feels exactly like Underworld (from its dark European setting and its "hidden war from humans" plot) but I, Frankenstein is not as bad as you think. It's not really good either, but maybe you should have extremely low expectations for it since you can enjoy it from this level.
Honestly, the action isn't that bad. I like Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, and Miranda Otto. It's a short ninety-two minutes and I can't say I was bored by it. It's not trying too hard to be flashy like Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and it doesn't feel tonally confused like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
If you're in a cynical "Ho-hum, Hollywood's out of ideas again" mood, then you probably won't like it. Just remember that I, Frankenstein is based off a graphic novel and it wants you to have a little fun. It's not great, but it's nowhere near one of the worst films of the year.
